Understanding 12V Compressor Duty Cycle vs. Continuous Power
Unlike household thermoelectric coolers or DC resistive heating elements that draw constant power every second they are plugged in, a modern 12-volt portable compressor fridge functions just like your home refrigerator. It uses a hermetic DC compressor (frequently a Secop/Danfoss or high-efficiency proprietary compressor) that cycles on when the internal cabinet warms up, and cycles off once the setpoint temperature is reached.
This on/off behavior is known as the duty cycle. Under average conditions (ambient temperature of 70°F to 75°F / 21°C to 24°C, set to 38°F / 3°C for refrigeration):
Therefore, while your multimeter will read 45 Watts (3.75 Amps @ 12V) while the motor is spinning, multiplying 45W by 24 hours (1,080Wh) grossly overestimates your real battery draw. The true daily consumption is typically 350 to 500 Watt-hours (approx. 30 to 42 Amp-hours).
